Frequently Asked Questions

What is QR Powder and how does it work?
QR Powder is a non-prescription “powder bandage”.  The ingredients are a non-toxic mixture
of a hydrophilic polymer and a potassium salt.
When poured on a wound and upon contact with blood or exudate, in combination with
manual pressure to the wound, QR Powder quickly forms a strong scab that completely
covers the wound and stops the bleeding.
QR Powder is not a vasoconstrictor or a cauterizing agent.   QR Powder is not biologically
derived and is non-toxic.

On what type of wounds can I apply QR Powder?
Use QR Powder on external wounds that have blood, such as cuts, skin tears, avulsions,
nosebleeds, and even wounds that may later require sutures. If sutures are required, the
protective scab that forms may be removed by a medical professional by soaking it with
saline solution and gently scraping it off. QR Powder must be totally irrigated off the wound
prior to applying sutures.

Does QR Powder cauterize or burn the skin?   No. QR is a powder wound
dressing that works by combining with blood and forming an instant, protective seal/scab.  It
is not a cauterizing agent and doesn’t burn or damage tissue.

Can QR Powder cause allergic reactions?
The product is hypoallergenic.  No allergic reactions have been reported.

Can QR Powder be used with medications?
Since QR Powder does not depend on the blood's natural clotting mechanism to be effective,
it can be used by people on anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, aspirin therapy or other
blood thinning medications.

Will QR Powder work with people who bleed easily?
Yes.  QR Powder does not depend on the blood’s natural clotting mechanisms to be
effective, so it will work on people who bleed easily.

How do I apply QR Powder?
After tapping the QR Powder onto the wound, apply pressure with your fingers for 30 seconds
to ensure the powder combines with the blood to create a protective scab. If there is no
further bleeding, gently dust off any excess powder without disturbing the scab. The scab will
fall off on its own when the wound has healed.

How much QR Powder should I apply?
Apply as much QR Powder as it takes to completely cover the wound and any blood around
it.  Ensure that there is a layer of dry powder on the top of the wound before applying pressure.

How large of a wound can I treat?
Generally, one application of QR Powder should be enough to cover a 2 inch laceration;
however, if the laceration is deep or severe and blood flow is significant, an additional
application may be needed.

Will I feel any discomfort when I use QR Powder?
For wounds with ample blood present you should feel no discomfort at all. However, for
wounds like abrasions, where there is little blood present, a temporary warming sensation
might be felt depending on the location and severity of the wound.

Can I use my fingers to apply QR Powder?
We recommend applying the QR Powder directly from the dispenser onto the wound. For
difficult to reach areas like head wounds and nosebleeds, the QR applicator should be used
to most effectively apply the powder.

Can I apply QR Powder to a wound if I am sweating?
Yes, the QR Powder will instantly form a protective scab/seal that adheres to the wound, even
if the skin is moist with perspiration. If the wound is in a location that may be easily bumped
or disturbed, we recommend protecting the wound with a bandage over the QR scab.

Can I wash the QR Powder off after the blood flow has stopped?
No, it is important to keep the protective scab clean and dry until it has hardened (usually in
one to two hours). Once the seal scab has hardened, the treated area can get wet or
submerged in water (i.e., showering or swimming.)

Do I need to remove the protective scab?
No, the protective scab will fall off naturally.

Do I need to cover my wound to protect it?
You can cover the wound if desired, but the scab will allow nothing into the wound, including
germs and dirt.

Can QR Powder be applied along with other creams or ointments?
No, it is recommended to apply QR Powder without the use of creams or ointments.

I only used half a dispenser. Can I save the rest?
No, the QR Powder is moisture sensitive. Once it is exposed to air, it must be used within a
few minutes or discarded.

Will the QR Powder stain or scar the skin?
Unlike other products on the market, QR Powder does not stain or scar the skin.

Does QR have a shelf life?
QR has a shelf life of 2 1/2 years from the date of packaging.  The expiration date is listed on
each unit/package.

Do you have clinical or laboratory studies to prove that QR Powder is
safe and it works?
Yes. The powder passed all FDA-required safety and toxicity testing.  In addition, Biolife has
conducted many studies on the efficacy of QR Powder. You can view these studies
here.

Does the potency of QR vary among Nosebleeds, Cuts & Wounds and
Kids? If so, how?
Yes.  We have two formulations of QR Powder. The powder that is used in QR for Cuts and
Lacerations and QR for Nosebleeds is for use (1) on most cuts, skin tears and lacerations in
adults and (2) more difficult-to-treat nosebleeds. The powder has been used successfully by
people on blood thinners, with bleeding disorders, low platelet counts and other conditions
causing persistent and prolonged bleeding. The powder that is used in QR for Kids and QR
for Nosebleeds Gentle Formula is for use (1) on cuts and scrapes in kids and (2) minor
nosebleeds and/or occasional nosebleeds in adults and children. When applied on children,
it provides greater comfort upon application.

Nosebleed

Can I use QR powder for a posterior nosebleed?
QR Powder for Nosebleeds (with applicator) is indicated for anterior nosebleeds, which
represent the 90% of nosebleeds that take place in the lower, two-thirds of the nose.
Nosebleeds that occur in the upper posterior require other treatment approaches as directed
by a medical professional. QR Powder is currently not indicated for posterior nosebleeds.

If I use the Nosebleed applicator once and it is bloody, but I need a
second application to stop the bleeding, can the original applicator be
used again?
We do not recommend using the Nosebleed applicator more than once due to sanitary
concerns once it has been removed from the nostril.

What is the applicator included with QR + Applicator made of?
The applicator is made of a special microfiber, specifically chenille.  It loads and releases
eight times more powder than a standard cotton swab.

What is the difference between QR for Nosebleeds and Gentle Formula?
While both products are highly effective, the key differences between these products are as
follows: The QR for Nosebleeds formula is recommended for more difficult to treat
nosebleeds; those experienced by people on blood thinners, with bleeding disorders, low
platelet counts, with HHT, and other conditions causing persistent and prolonged bleeding.
The QR for Nosebleeds Gentle Formula is a different formulation that provides more comfort
upon application and less warming-stinging sensation. It is recommended for minor
nosebleeds and/or occasional nosebleeds in adults and children. Mothers buying for their
childrens’ nosebleeds should buy this product unless the children have a special condition
causing frequent and more severe nosebleeds.
