What is Biolife's Proprietary Powder?
Biolife's powder is a non-biological, non-sorbable powder that, with light pressure, forms a barrier seal over a bleeding
wound. The external seal controls bleeding, fluid loss, absorbs exudate and creates a low pH barrier over and around the
wound surface to help prevent infection.
The powder is a dry, fine powder made from a mixture of a potassium ferrate and a proton-rich hydrophilic polymer.
Mechanism of Action
When the powder is exposed under pressure to blood or exudate, the interfacial liquid fraction is rapidly absorbed by the
powder, concentrating the blood solids at the surface of the wound. The iron component agglomerates the solid
components and forms a thin, strong membrane at the wound/powder interface, sealing the wound surface and stopping
bleeding.
The natural clotting cascade continues below the interface. The powder seal creates a smooth surface, transforming the
solid components of the exudate into a skin-like barrier that seals the wound from bacteria and helps maintain a moist
environment at the wound surface.
The fraction of powder not directly involved in seal formation sits on top of the seal as dry powder. The hydrophilic polymer
continues to absorb soluble wound exudate while keeping the solid fractions of the exudate in contact with the surface of the
wound where it has the most beneficial effect.
The absorbed soluble fraction and any potentially-colonizing microbes contain cations such as calcium, potassium and
sodium. As the dissolved cations are absorbed by the resin, protons are exchanged for cations, reducing the pH. The pH
is so low (pH~2 on the distal side of the wound) that a hostile environment is created towards potentially colonizing
microbes. The powder helps prevent wounds from becoming infected.
The low pH also inhibits the formation of inflammatory compounds such as MMPs (matrix metalloprotease) in exudate
(Leveen et al, 1973). Normal acute healing (hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and maturation) occurs because the
low pH helps the wound move naturally through the inflammatory step. With a fresh wound, the wound healing proceeds
normally.
